Charlie & Piper

“Charlie & Piper”

My Charlie had another bladder flush for a calcium sludge buildup last week, and he takes it really personally. Just like last time it took him many days to recover. He was in stasis after we got him home and had a real tough time keeping his temperature up for a couple of days. That’s finally stable now, and he’s eating most things, but only wants a little bit of pellets. He might be getting lazy and preferring the syringe-fed Critical Care food, so we’re decreasing that. He has always been a very fussy eater but he’s a tough little guy.

His mate Piper has been such a good girl while Charlie has been sick. I had to separate them for a few days so I could leave food down for him that she wouldn’t eat. She never bothered us when we were medicating Charlie and didn’t seem to mind being closed out of my room. I was a little worried they might become unbonded, but I let them visit for a few hours on Sunday and they were fine. They’re together all day again now, except for a few hours when I close him in my room to get him to eat some pellets.

Guinea Pig Shell Game

Our guinea pig friend is heading back home today. I’m sure going to miss his cute little face and the little wiggle his butt makes when he’s running around. Yesterday he was napping in his igloo and decided he wanted to eat some pellets. Instead of just coming out of the igloo, he bopped his head up and moved the igloo over to the pellet bowl, ate some pellets, then nudged the igloo back to where it was. He’s like a little turtle! I don’t know if that was laziness, or inventiveness. I’ve seen rabbits who stretch their necks to reach food so they don’t have to get up, but nothing like what Jeffrey does!

Guinea Pig Sound Effects

Jeffrey makes such cute little noises. They’re different from rabbit noises. His purring sounds more like the noise my Charlie makes when he’s asleep. I say it’s snoring, but he kind of sounds like a pigeon cooing. Whenever I put my hand in his cage to clean or give him food, I’m greeted with little chirps and oinks. Hopefully that’s his way of saying, “Hello!” and not “Get out of my space, human!” He seems pretty cordial though, so I’m going with the first one.

Keeping Pretty & Hydrated

Whenever I change Jeffrey’s water dish in the morning, he comes right over for a drink, just like my Charlie does. He seems to drink so much during the day that I’ve been topping him off before bedtime so the level doesn’t drop too low. We had a few warmer days here last week, so I guess he was trying to keep hydrated!

My (not-so) little Mini Rex is in the middle of a shed, getting ready for springtime. His coat is always more noticeably shaggy than my other buns whenever he sheds because of the short Rex fur. I can’t groom him like I do the others, again because of the short fur, but fortunately he lets me groom him up on the table, albeit while still in the litter box, and doesn’t seem to mind very much. He just munched on clover hay while I plucked him. The above photo was pre-pluck and his coat looks much better now. His appearance is very important to him so I always try and help him look pretty for all the visitors!

Everyone is enjoying the clover in the hay we recently got from Agway. Bunnies and piggy included! They’ll probably wind up putting on a couple of ounces from it, but we’re a third through the bale already and we probably won’t have as much in the next. Everyone seems to have less of an appetite for pellets, which makes sense if they’re pigging out on clover instead.

I had to give my Charlie some hay without any clover in his litter box so he’d eat all of his pellets overnight. In the daytime he’s so eager to get some clover that he’s willing to jump into Piper’s higher litter box, even if she’s already in there! Look at those little legs go! I had to cut the side down on his box to encourage him to use it, but apparently clover trumps arthritis. Good to know!

Little Furry Yawns

Now when I go to pet Jeffrey he lays down, stretches out and purrs like a lion. He didn’t mind at all when I cleaned his cage yesterday. He just hopped over to the other side and let me do my work. He’s a smart little piggy, he learns fast. I got to see a cute little guinea pig yawn last night. Yawning critters are always adorable. Yawning humans, not so much. Maybe it’s the fur. Then again, overly furry humans aren’t all that attractive either!

I got to pet Jeffrey for a while yesterday and he purred for me. It’s a different kind of purr than rabbits do. It sounds more like a cat’s purr and I could feel his body vibrating.

I saw him drinking a lot from his water bottle and I know bottles are harder to get a drink from, so I put a small bunny water bowl in cage. He came right over and started drinking and drinking. Then he came back again later for a drink. Guess it’s a hit!

I also saw him repeatedly tip over his pellet dish and wondered if he’d do better with a ceramic dish, so the pellets didn’t get all mixed with the cage bedding. He didn’t tip this one over, so I guess he likes it.

One Relaxed Pig

Our house has all sorts of new noises that the bunny and guinea pig visitors have to get used to during their stay with us. So far Jeffrey doesn’t seem too bothered by the noise, and certainly knows how to relax when he’s feeling comfy. He’s in his own little world when he’s in his igloo, must be nice. No bunnies to come over and nudge you to get out of “their” space or to steal your food. Guinea pigs don’t seem to flop the same us bunnies, since their bodies are built differently, but he sure does “melt” into a little piggy puddle.

I gave Jeffrey a few little head pets and he didn’t seem to mind. I always let him give me a good sniff before I pick up anything near him so knows that it’s just me. He spends about half of the day sleeping in his igloo, and comes out to eat. He loves munching on hay as much as my bunnies do. I gave him some of their clover hay and wolfed that right down. “Thank you bunnies!”

My Butterscotch wanted to get a better view of him so he tried to jump up onto the side of the couch that’s in Jeffrey’s pen. Fortunately I was on it at the time. He didn’t actually make it up though, but I decided to put taller fences around the side of the couch so he couldn’t do it again. I knew Jeffrey wouldn’t be jumping on the couch, but I wasn’t expecting an attack from the right flank courtesy of my Butters!
