“Butterscotch & Hershey”

Yesterday was my Hershey’s 6th birthday. He got lots of treats and I made him a “Mini T-Rex” cake, since he’s my ferocious little Mini Rex. He definitely wasn’t afraid of that cake. Nothing scares this little guy! Us humans enjoyed the cake while he and his brother Butterscotch munched on some alfalfa hay.

“Jimmy”

Yesterday I helped a bun who was brought to a local town animal shelter. None of the shelters here on Long Island are equipped to handle rabbits, so our group, the Long Island Rabbit Rescue, takes them in as soon as we have room. I picked little Sherwin up from the shelter and brought him right over to the best rabbit vet in the area, Catnip and Carrots. He’s a young bun and incredibly sweet. Even though he didn’t know me at all, he let me rub his head and purred. He got neutered later in the day and will be up for adoption soon. I don’t think it will take too long for this little guy to find a forever home!

Another bun from a local shelter that is now in our group’s care, Jimmy, had a few health problems. Fortunately a stay at Catnip was able to help him out. He’s on the mend now (hooray!) but leaves a costly vet bill behind. I don’t usually post these, but he has a YOUCARING page set up. If you can help donate, even just a few dollars, all the bunnies on Long Island will be grateful, especially Jimmy.

“Charlie & Piper”

My little Charlie is basically fed round-the-clock so he can get enough food in him without Piper stealing it all. Sometimes I separate them, but frequently throughout the day, Charlie hops over to whomever is upstairs with him, looks at them, and periscopes on his back legs. “Feed me, human! I’m hungry” Our vet thought it was humorous and had never heard of a rabbit doing that, but my Charlie lets us know in no uncertain terms that he wants to be fed, NOW.

The tricky part is sneaking him pellets without Piper finding out. I’m glad he’s smart enough to do that, otherwise I don’t know if he’d be able to get enough food and not be separated from Piper for half of the day.

“Leonidas”

Leonidas is heading home today. He didn’t always seem thrilled to have me in his pen, but he did come up on the couch with me last night. He sniffed around and even put his paws on my leg. I did try to pet him, but he ducked out of the way. “I’m in explorer mode!” I’m used to bunnies trying to do their own thing, so it doesn’t bother me.

“Leonidas”

Leonidas has been mostly keeping to himself, except at meal time. That’s to be expected though. Every bun is my friend when I’m going to feed them. “I love you! Now drop the food already!” Leonidas did get a glimpse of my Butterscotch when I was adjusting the cardboard. Butterscotch tends to hang out next to the visitors pens, guarding them as it were. I don’t let them see each other that much if the visitor is a boy, since that tends to rile Hershey up. Butterscotch is allowed a few peeks when Hershey isn’t looking though!

“Leonidas”

It’s Friday the 13th, and I don’t have a black cat around, but I do have a black bunny! Leonidas is here for the weekend and he’s already made himself quite at home. He was a little shy at first and stayed mostly behind the couch, but once I left the room he came out and hopped all over, exploring. When I gave him his bedtime snack, he growled at me a little. I guess I wasn’t fast enough. I’m certainly used to pushy bunnies in this house, so a little fussing doesn’t faze me.

Lola has a few favorite napping spots. During the day she likes to sleep under her towel tent, then in the evening she moves over to the corner of her fence where she snuggles with her teddy bear and has a great view of my boys. Overnight she prefers to sleep in a loaf high atop the table so she can guard the living room. Glad she’s so comfy!

“Lola”

Lola is now climbing onto my legs and into my lap from the table. She lets me pet her once she gets there, but I think she’s really just exploring everywhere she can. She loves it when my Butterscotch or Hershey comes over to say hello. She runs right over to the fence and they stare at each other. “I like you!” Or maybe “I’m not afraid of you!”

“Lola”

I can tell when Lola is about to jump up onto the table in front of me now. Last night after she did and tried to eat the buttons on my remote, I picked her up and placed her on my lap. My rabbits NEVER go in my lap, unless they are looking for food, but Lola stayed there while I pet her for a while. I don’t get many lap bunnies in this house, and Lola is a nice warm one, especially on such a cold and snowy day. Thanks, lap-warmer!

Yesterday, Lola decided to jump up onto the table next to my stuff. She sniffed my phone, laptop, and drink. She chinned my laptop, so I guess that means it’s hers now. She didn’t even try to bite my phone case, which my Piper is always trying to do, so I guess I got off pretty lucky. “You can keep the phone, but I’m keeping the laptop! I can’t do touch screen with these furry paws!”
