Pass those Stones, Charlie!

Bella really loves to “dive in” at meal-time! Always happy to see a hungry bunny. It’s when they don’t want to eat that you worry. As promised, here’s my update on my Charlie:

After quickly loosing his appetite 2 Fridays ago, I initially treated my Charlie for stasis. His temp was low that day, but stayed over 101 after heating him in his carrier on a heating pad for an hour. He was eating greens and hay, but not pellets. He had 3 previous cases of stasis like this over the past two years, but this time he was taking much longer to recover. We got him into the vet the day after Thanksgiving, and his x-rays showed that he had one or two small kidney stones. Doc showed me how to give subcutaneous fluids, and he was to get 25mls a day for a week.

His follow-up appointment is tomorrow, and I believe he has passed the stone(s). His appetite is increasing every day and he is almost back to normal. His behavior isn’t as sluggish as in 2 weeks ago either, he even chased Piper around last night. I was already syringe feeding him Critical Care, since he was eating no pellets, but I have stopped that now. I also gave him 1ml syringefuls of water, which he liked taking since he’s a lazy boy.

I wonder now if the 3 previous cases of “prolonged stasis” were actually caused by kidney stones as well. I’ve cut out his dandelion and parsley since they are high in calcium, and switched to watercress, arugula and cilantro. I hope that if I notice a marked decrease in appetite again that I can just start offering syringes of water and he can pass it more easily. I’ll be asking our vet for advice on that tomorrow. For now, he seems stable, for which I am very grateful!

Light it Up!

We started bringing down the rest of the Christmas decorations yesterday and put the top half on the tree. Well plugged it in for the first time this year, and all the lights work! That’s always a relief, especially considering how careful you have to be with rabbits and electrical wires. I used a shower curtain rod cover to cover the plug this year and we’ll see how it holds up. All the buns took notice of this suddenly illuminated colored tower, and I think they approve. Nobody thumped anyway!

I’ll write up more about this tomorrow, but my Charlie is doing much better this week. I believe he passed his kidney stone and I plan to be more proactive about them in the future.

Pellet Tossin’

Bella bunny is a rabbit who doesn’t mess around. She likes to throw around her pellet dish so they’re all over the floor, and easier for her to eat. I fixed that by giving her a heavy ceramic dish, and she let me know how annoyed she was with her inability to flip that one over by giving me the bunny-butt. Sorry, girl, but at least this way no pellets will get lost under the couch! I know you don’t want to waste any!

“Hershey & Butterscotch”

My Hershey had his annual vet appointment today and he was very good. He only goes once a year, unlike his brothers, so it’s probably a more scary experience. He’s in good health, aside from being overweight. He’s active though, so he doesn’t let it slow him down. Now we just need to lose a few more ounces, my Not-So-Mini Rex!

I came in the garage door last night, and Bella was not happy about it. She started thumping and boy are her thumps loud! They sounded like little explosions. I’m glad no one was underneath her as they might have thought it was fireworks.

Skirt Nudgin’

Both girls were so interested in the skirt I had on yesterday. They both came over to me when I sat on the couch and rubbed their heads on the edge. Maybe they would like skirts of their own, nah! Glenda bunny is heading home later today, which give us a chance to put up our Christmas tree before more bunnies come and take over the living room. Right now half of the tree is sitting in the corner and I don’t think the rabbits know what to make of it. “Something is wrong about that tree, but I don’t know what!”

Welcome Back, Cameron!

Bella’s favorite thing to do here is to shred the pieces of cardboard I put in the corners of her pen. That’s exactly what they’re there for, and she certainly makes good use of them. She shredded one piece her very first night here! She then loves to flop on top of her little pile of cardboard, exhausted. Buns have such an exhausting life. Glenda isn’t as destructive, but both buns do very noisy runs every day. I think lops have bigger back feet and that makes for louder runs.

My foster bun Cameron came home from his neuter yesterday and he is in great spirits, running around, eating, just like he was before. It’s been a couple of days so I had hoped he’d be all better by the time he came home, but you never know for sure. He’ll be up for adoption soon and any home would be lucky to have this sweet little guy hopping around their house!

“Glenda & Bella”

One of my Thanksgiving traditions is to give all the bunnies in the house a little taste of my mom’s cranberry sauce. Some like it, some don’t. This year everybun ate some! We had a house full of people and bunnies, and everyone was very well-behaved (well maybe except for a couple of the humans)! Our little foster bun Cameron had to spend Thanksgiving at the vet, recovering from his neuter, but he will welcomed home soon. I even saved him a little cranberry sauce!

“Charlie & Piper”

My Charlie bunny is still having some kind of appetite issue and we are bringing him in to the vet tomorrow morning if he does not improve today. Our little foster bun Cameron was neutered yesterday and is doing well. We hope to pick him up from the vet tomorrow. I’m very thankful for our wonderful rabbit-savvy vets at Catnip and Carrots Veterinary Hospital.

As for our two visiting rabbits, they are having a very fun time together. Glenda does her bunny runs in the early evening. Last night that was when Bella was napping, but it didn’t bother her one bit. She was even snoring a little bit. Later, she started her exercise and did very loud runs around her pen.

Bella and Glenda are visiting us for Thanksgiving this year. My boys Hershey and Butterscotch sure are happy to have two lovely ladies with us for the holiday. Bella has already picked out her favorite napping spot, next to the bookcase. She’s a big girl and is not bothered by anything. So very different from my big girl, Piper, but she is a lop. I know Glenda is always a mellow girl and she’s a lop too.

Good Luck, Cameron!

My little foster boy Cameron is getting neutered tomorrow. He’s such a little mellow sweetheart that I can barely believe has wasn’t neutered already. He’s such a happy little guy. He likes to run around his pen, flicking his head and lifting up the end of his little cardboard tent with his nose. Sending happy thoughts his way and hopeful that everything goes well tomorrow. I don’t think he’ll be coming home until Friday since the vet is closed to visitors on Thanksgiving, so I’ll have to save him some cranberry sauce!
