“Hershey, Butterscotch & Cameron”

Even though I’ve been spending a lot of time caring for my Charlie, I make sure to save some time for the other Kronenbuns. The boys downstairs are pretty good at entertaining themselves though. Cameron loves to lie at the fence near his big brothers. They would rather snuggle with each other than be petted, but Cameron is always up for petting. He’s a licker too, and it’s always nice when a rabbit reciprocates for all that petting!

“Butterscotch & Hershey”

Every morning my Butterscotch waits at the end of his pen for me to take away the cardboard between pens so that he can see the other rabbits in the living room. Cameron usually comes over to greet him, and then Cheeks says hello. Most rabbits only wait for food, but some like to see other rabbits. Some even like to see people, but not most of mine. Cheeks is happy to see me for petting, so I’m always happy to oblige her on the couch.

Hershey’s Fudge

This is my (Not-So) Mini Rex, Hershey. He came to us overweight and he is a prime example of how difficult it is for rabbits to lose weight once they put it on. He has lost some, but I would like him to be about a pound lighter than he is. When you’re 5lbs 5oz, that’s a lot. He still moves around well, considering he is 7 years old, but he has short Rex fur, so I worry the extra weight he carries may lead to sore hocks as he gets older.

So far, all that happens on his feet is smeared cecotropes. (Insert Hershey’s fudge joke here.) Due to his weight, he’s not able to to eat them directly, and given his ravenous appetite, I’m sure he would eat them all if he could. I’d like to get him to lose some weight so he could at least do that. So, a little less pellets and greens ever day, and we’ll see what happens. He’s got to shed some of that winter weight for bikini season!

“Cameron & Hershey”

It’s been a little while since I did an update on my foster bun Cameron, so here it is! He’s been pretty stable now that he’s been off all of his meds. He wobbles a little, and might fall over, but is always quick to right himself. I caught him cleaning both ears without falling over, and he’s able to hop in and out of the litter box with no trouble. He spends most of the day in his long and narrow pen sleeping, and then I let him out in the evening for several hours. He loves to sit at the fence and “talk” to whichever other bunny is over there. My Hershey is usually a very tough, aggressive guy, but he seems almost sweet with Cameron. Either he can tell that Cameron is a little disabled, or he’s just pretending to be nice. He does that to try and steal food, so I wouldn’t put it past him!

Does My Rabbit Want a Friend?

“Hershey & Cameron”

Over the past few days, Cameron has been having a great time in the living room. Whenever Hershey or Butterscotch come over to the fence, he hops over and has conversations with them through the fence. He was rescued with four other rabbits in Baldwin, so maybe he misses the rabbit-company. A rabbit I rescued last summer, Zelda, also seemed to perk up when she was being fostered next to another rabbit. She was alone when rescued, but who knows what life was like before that. Cameron is a very chill guy and I believe Zelda is a peppy little girl, so personality doesn’t seem to make big difference in whether or not a rabbit would like a friend. My Charlie seemed very independent, but when we fostered Bella, he immediately fell in love and “made” us keep her for him. Maybe we can find Cameron a forever home with a bunny-mate to have all to himself.

“Hershey & Cameron”

My Butterscotch has been sitting on top of a chair in the living room to get a better view of Cameron when he comes out to play. Hershey just goes right up to their double fence and sits there, waiting for him. Cameron does go over to toward him to say hello, but he’s not as interested in them as they are in him. He seems like he’s okay on his own, but I think he’d also do well as part of a pair. He does love grooming his stuffed toys, just like my Charlie did before we got Bella.

Lately, Piper has been digging everywhere. One of her litter boxes only has newspaper and hay since she really only goes in there to eat hay. Now I frequently find a mess of shredded newspaper mixed in with the hay. I guess it also became a digging box. She was digging at the corner of my comforter this morning, trying to get under the bed. Then she jumped up on the bed and started digging at the bedding. She jumped up onto the pillows, into the headboard, but never seemed satisfied. I have no clue what she was after!

“Hershey & Butterscotch”

My Hershey turned 7 years old this weekend so we celebrated with carrot curls and blueberries for the bunnies, and chocolate cake for the humans. Any excuse I have to make a cake, I do! Butterscotch got a little sick (GI stasis) that night, so I don’t think I’ll be repeating those treats when his next birthday comes around. His constitution is so sensitive that he has trouble if I deviate from his regular diet. He’s feeling better now though, so that’s fortunate.

My Dark Chocolate Bunny

This Saturday is my Hershey’s seventh birthday. Aside from a bit overweight, (I call him my Not-So-Mini-Rex) he is quite healthy for his age. He’s built like a tank and is pretty much able to bulldoze anything in his path. He sure looks like a sweetie, but this bun has spunk. He’s smart, which for rabbits means he’s not always very nice because he knows what he wants, and how to get it. I usually give lots of treats to the buns on their birthdays, but Hershey has been gaining with the recent clover hay, so I’ll have to come up with something else for him this year. Maybe an extra-special salad? If he were a human that would sound like an awful idea, but fortunately he’s a bunny!

Merry Christmas Everybunny!

“Butterscotch & Hershey”

“Charlie & Piper”

I think out of all the buns in the house, my Piper had the best Christmas. She got a piece of a straw hat and she was running around the house with it in her mouth, jumping up and down, just like a 3-year-old at Christmas should. She also ripped apart a toy that Rusty’s family brought her, but that’s just how she has fun. Charlie enjoys himself by watching her crazy antics. Hershey and Butterscotch weren’t too thrilled with their presents, as they cared more about getting their food. Note to self, feed rabbits first, then give them presents!

This is Cameron’s first Christmas, so he didn’t really know what to make of it. I opened his presents for him and he did come over to check them out. He was more interested in the treats than the toys though. Rusty was trying to climb his fence to get at his presents. He’s a seasoned vet of receiving gifts, so he was not about to wait until everyone else had opened theirs before he got a crack at his. All bunnies were eventually satisfied and fell asleep for their Christmas naps, some amid the debris of their “brand new” presents.

“Butterscotch & Hershey”

I always like to figure out what my rabbits genes are, so I did little research last night on my new foster-bun Cameron to see if I could figure him out. Turns out he’s a black Siamese Sable Dwarf. Sables are interesting because their coat can change colors as they shed and new fur grows in. They also have ruby tinted eyes, which I noticed in Cameron weeks ago. He’s like Rudolph, but with ruby eyes instead of his rose! Whatever the genes, Cameron sure is one handsome rabbit. He’s currently up for adoption through the Long Island Rabbit Rescue Group:

I finished decorating for Christmas this weekend, and now the tree is fully trimmed. Hershey and Butterscotch were watching me from below. The tree looks different from their perspective, but just as bright and shiny. Hershey probably just wanted to bite it and see if there was any food in it.
