Our guinea pig friend is heading back home today. I’m sure going to miss his cute little face and the little wiggle his butt makes when he’s running around. Yesterday he was napping in his igloo and decided he wanted to eat some pellets. Instead of just coming out of the igloo, he bopped his head up and moved the igloo over to the pellet bowl, ate some pellets, then nudged the igloo back to where it was. He’s like a little turtle! I don’t know if that was laziness, or inventiveness. I’ve seen rabbits who stretch their necks to reach food so they don’t have to get up, but nothing like what Jeffrey does!

Guinea Pig Sound Effects

Jeffrey makes such cute little noises. They’re different from rabbit noises. His purring sounds more like the noise my Charlie makes when he’s asleep. I say it’s snoring, but he kind of sounds like a pigeon cooing. Whenever I put my hand in his cage to clean or give him food, I’m greeted with little chirps and oinks. Hopefully that’s his way of saying, “Hello!” and not “Get out of my space, human!” He seems pretty cordial though, so I’m going with the first one.

Keeping Pretty & Hydrated

Whenever I change Jeffrey’s water dish in the morning, he comes right over for a drink, just like my Charlie does. He seems to drink so much during the day that I’ve been topping him off before bedtime so the level doesn’t drop too low. We had a few warmer days here last week, so I guess he was trying to keep hydrated!

My (not-so) little Mini Rex is in the middle of a shed, getting ready for springtime. His coat is always more noticeably shaggy than my other buns whenever he sheds because of the short Rex fur. I can’t groom him like I do the others, again because of the short fur, but fortunately he lets me groom him up on the table, albeit while still in the litter box, and doesn’t seem to mind very much. He just munched on clover hay while I plucked him. The above photo was pre-pluck and his coat looks much better now. His appearance is very important to him so I always try and help him look pretty for all the visitors!

“Piper & Charlie”

Everyone is enjoying the clover in the hay we recently got from Agway. Bunnies and piggy included! They’ll probably wind up putting on a couple of ounces from it, but we’re a third through the bale already and we probably won’t have as much in the next. Everyone seems to have less of an appetite for pellets, which makes sense if they’re pigging out on clover instead.

I had to give my Charlie some hay without any clover in his litter box so he’d eat all of his pellets overnight. In the daytime he’s so eager to get some clover that he’s willing to jump into Piper’s higher litter box, even if she’s already in there! Look at those little legs go! I had to cut the side down on his box to encourage him to use it, but apparently clover trumps arthritis. Good to know!

Now when I go to pet Jeffrey he lays down, stretches out and purrs like a lion. He didn’t mind at all when I cleaned his cage yesterday. He just hopped over to the other side and let me do my work. He’s a smart little piggy, he learns fast. I got to see a cute little guinea pig yawn last night. Yawning critters are always adorable. Yawning humans, not so much. Maybe it’s the fur. Then again, overly furry humans aren’t all that attractive either!

One Relaxed Pig

Our house has all sorts of new noises that the bunny and guinea pig visitors have to get used to during their stay with us. So far Jeffrey doesn’t seem too bothered by the noise, and certainly knows how to relax when he’s feeling comfy. He’s in his own little world when he’s in his igloo, must be nice. No bunnies to come over and nudge you to get out of “their” space or to steal your food. Guinea pigs don’t seem to flop the same us bunnies, since their bodies are built differently, but he sure does “melt” into a little piggy puddle.

“Butterscotch”

I gave Jeffrey a few little head pets and he didn’t seem to mind. I always let him give me a good sniff before I pick up anything near him so knows that it’s just me. He spends about half of the day sleeping in his igloo, and comes out to eat. He loves munching on hay as much as my bunnies do. I gave him some of their clover hay and wolfed that right down. “Thank you bunnies!”

My Butterscotch wanted to get a better view of him so he tried to jump up onto the side of the couch that’s in Jeffrey’s pen. Fortunately I was on it at the time. He didn’t actually make it up though, but I decided to put taller fences around the side of the couch so he couldn’t do it again. I knew Jeffrey wouldn’t be jumping on the couch, but I wasn’t expecting an attack from the right flank courtesy of my Butters!

Jeffrey stayed in his cage after he arrived yesterday, but readily chowed down on greens, pellets, and hay. My boys were sitting on the other side of the fence watching him, so he might have been a little nervous. I put up cardboard at night so he would have more privacy. He’s such a cute little guy. His movements are a little different from those I’m accustomed to in rabbits. He’s a little jerkier. He doesn’t hop-he jumps. He also uses his front paws like hands, something rabbits only ever do when cleaning their faces. Welcome to Kamp Kronenberg, Jeffrey!

For such a little guy, Jeffrey sure can be noisy. He frequently “redecorates” his cage by moving his igloo around. It’s a noise that my rabbits aren’t used to and frightened Butterscotch yesterday. After moving it once, Butterscotch thumped every two minutes for 10 minutes. Such odd things seem to set him off. At least he’s not afraid of Jeffrey. They can now go nose-to-nose with him at the window between their fences. Hershey did it and stretched up tall just to let Jeffrey know how big he is. He’s always puffing himself up.

“Hershey & Butterscotch”

Glenda went home last night, so now we’ve just got the piggy (and my 4 rabbits). My Butterscotch and Hershey have a better view of Jeffrey now and they’re always glued to the fence when Jeffrey is moving around. He does come over and look at them, but I think they’re more interested in him. “What IS that thing??” He did make some cute oinking noises in the evening while looking at them. Maybe he was trying to talk to them!
